SPRING PRAIRIE — Two people died Saturday in a house fire in Spring Prairie Township, east of Elkhorn.

The Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victims as 58-year-old Bradly Chapman and 83-year-old Sylvia Chapman.

According to a news release, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call about 5:25 p.m. Saturday reporting a house on fire at W2162 Hwy 11 in the Town of Spring Prairie.

Deputies and fire personnel, along with Sheriff’s deputies, responded to find the residence’s second floor fully engulfed in flames.

Bystanders told first responders they were unsure if anyone was in the residence.

Deputies entered, attempting to locate anyone inside. Deputies did not locate anyone on the first floor.

The top of the stairs was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from the Lyons Fire Department continued to search for anyone inside and discovered two people in the second-floor apartment.

Firefighters immediately removed them from the burning building. Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful.

Mutual aid was initially requested from numerous fire departments to the 2nd box level and progressed to the 4th box level.

Firefighters continued to fight the fire, and at approximately 8:22 p.m., it was deemed under control. The last fire units cleared the scene at 1:04 a.m. on October 6th, 2024.

One firefighter was treated on scene by EMS for minor injuries and was released without transport.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating this incident.
