DARIEN. — S.M.I.L.E.S. equine therapy center, which has served people with special needs in our community for more than 40 years, is raising $1.5 million to expand its barn and improve accessibility for its participants.

According to a news release, the expansion is necessary to accommodate recent growth and meet the evolving needs of the local community. The investment will fund a larger barn to improve safety and capacity while also covering a portion of the outdoor arena to provide year-round outdoor sessions.

The organization has currently raised more than 50% of its $1.5 million target.

Money raised also is earmarked for property enhancements focused on sustainability and ensuring all clients and community members can access the grounds.

Since its founding in 1985, the program has grown to serve more than 180 clients annually.

The daily operations are managed by a team of eight staff members and supported by a group of more than 180 volunteers.
