ZENDA — Buddy Melges, known in the sailing world as “the Wizard of Zenda,” has died at age 93, according to the Melges Sailing Facebook page.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Buddy Melges. Today, we honor the remarkable life and enduring legacy of a man whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our hearts and the world of sailing,” read a post on the Melges Performance Sailing Facebook page.
Melges, a familiar face in Lake Geneva and at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club, is an Olympic gold and bronze medalist, a two-time Star world champion, a three-time 5.5 Meter world champion, a five-time E-Scow national champion, a seven-time skeeter ice boat world champion and a three-time Yachtsman of the Year.
He helped Bill Koch steer his America3 to a successful defense of the America’s Cup in 1992.
The Facebook post announcing Melges passing also asked people to share their memories.
“As we mourn the loss of a visionary and celebrate a life well-lived, we invite you to share your cherished memories with us as we collectively pay tribute to Buddy’s life. Your heartfelt stories and messages of remembrance are a testament to the profound impact he had on our community,” read the post.
