DARIEN — A Walworth County sheriff’s deputy had minor injuries after a woman, who says she wasn’t paying attention while eating a Taco Bell meal, slammed into the deputy’s squad car in the Interstate near Darien.
According to a news release, a Walworth County Sheriff’s Office squad car was rear-ended about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday while traveling northbound on I-43 near Hwy X in the Town of Darien.
The deputy was northbound on patrol on I-43 when he saw a vehicle behind him approaching at a high rate of speed.
The deputy was in the right lane, traveling at approximately 60 mph, when the vehicle continued to close the distance.
The deputy tried to accelerate, but that did not prevent the accident.
The vehicle rear-ended him at a high rate of speed.
The sheriff’s office says the driver was a 41-year-old female from the Town of Geneva, who said she was eating Taco Bell while driving and wasn’t paying attention. She showed no obvious signs of impairment and denied using alcohol or drugs.
The deputy reported minor injuries.
The Wisconsin State Patrol investigated the crash.
The investigation remains active.
