ELKHORN — Police are asking the public for tips as they investigate the fatal shooting early Thursday where two people were found dead in a downtown Elkhorn bar.

The Elkhorn Police Department has identified the couple as Emerson and Gina Weingart.

WISN-TV in Milwaukee says Gina was working as a bartender and Emerson had come by to keep her company.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center was called about 12:10 a.m. Thursday for a report of shots fired and a person down inside the Sports Page Barr on Wisconsin Street in Elkhorn.

Officers from the Elkhorn Police Department and Walworth County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the scene and when they arrived found a man and woman inside the bar who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the Elkhorn Police Department.

The news release did not indicate if police are looking for a separate shooter.

Identities of the victims are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin, police say.

By early afternoon, the block of Wisconsin Street in front of the bar remained closed.

Vehicles from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Elkhorn Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and others were on scene.

Authorities were seen going in and out of the bar throughout the morning. At least one sheriff’s office K-9 was on scene.

This incident is currently under investigation by the Elkhorn Police Department, which is being assisted by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office, Wisconsin State Crime Lab, and Wisconsin State Patrol.

In addition, officers from the Town of Geneva, City of Delavan and Town of Delavan Police Departments initially responded to assist along with the Elkhorn Area Fire Department EMS.
