LA FAYETTE TOWNSHIP — Authorities say the man who was pulled from the rubble of a La Fayette Township home explosion Tuesday and airlifted to a hospital has died.

The only occupant of the structure was a 68-year-old male resident,

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Leland R. Holden, 68, who was located in the rubble and transported by Flight for Life to a local trauma center where he later died.

The Elkhorn Fire Department is investigating the cause of the explosion with the assistance of the State Fire Marshall and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.

The home exploded shortly before 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, and the Walworth County Communications Center began receiving numerous calls after about a fire and reports of an explosion at a home, according to a news release.

The residence is located on Kulow Road in the Town of Lafayette just north of Elkhorn.

Walworth County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Elkhorn Fire Department were dispatched.

When they arrived, sheriff’s deputies reported a small fire and confirmed an explosion had occurred at the residence.

Deputies immediately began to search for survivors and secured the area until the arrival of fire and rescue personnel.
