Walworth County Celebrates Designation of New Agricultural Enterprise Area
DELAVAN TOWNSHIP — More than 9,000 acres in Walworth County have been designated as the new Delavan Lake Watershed Agricultural Enterprise Area, or AEA, as of the first of the year.
The designation from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection marks a step forward for local agriculture, conservation and the community’s economic vitality, according to a news release from Walworth County.
Located in the towns of Delavan, Geneva, and Walworth, as well as the village of Fontana, the Delavan Lake Watershed AEA reflects the commitment of 11 local landowners, local government, and community partners who petitioned for this designation.
The petitioners want to promote agricultural conservation practices that enhance water quality, protect local surface water resources, and foster collaboration between agricultural producers and watershed stakeholders.
“This designation is a testament to the dedication of these landowners and partners in preserving farmland and protecting natural resources,” said Mandy Bonneville, Deputy Director of Walworth County’s Land Use & Resource Management department. “AEA designations are valuable tools to strengthen our agricultural economy while ensuring that our land and water are cared for responsibly.”
Through the AEA designation, landowners can enter into voluntary farmland preservation agreements. These agreements commit all or a portion of their land to agricultural use while maintaining soil and water conservation standards. In return, landowners may be eligible for an annual farmland preservation tax credit of $10 to $12.50 per acre, depending on zoning.
This new AEA designation supports Walworth County’s ongoing efforts to balance farmland protection with environmental stewardship and community growth.
