BURLINGTON — Burlington police say a garbage truck that was backing up struck and killed an employee of the Pizza Ranch restaurant Monday morning.

According to a news release from the police department, the Racine County Communications Center received the report shortly before 10 a.m. Monday of an accident in the parking lot of Pizza Ranch on Milwaukee Avenue involving an ASDA owned garbage truck with an injured person down in the parking lot.

Burlington Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the scene only to find that the person hit by the garbage truck had died and no medical assistance could be rendered.

Preliminary investigation indicates the garbage truck was performing a backing maneuver when the truck hit the victim while he was walking towards his car. The business was closed at the time of the accident.

The deceased is a 34-year-old Waukesha resident who was employed by Pizza Ranch whose name has not yet been released.

“Our condolences go out to the family, loved ones and co-workers of the deceased during this difficult time,” police said in their news release.

The operator of the garbage truck and the ASDA Company are cooperating with law enforcement efforts to conduct a thorough investigation.

Burlington police were assisted in the investigation by the Racine County Communications Center, Racine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Technical Reconstruction Unit.
