WHITEWATER — Black-and-white photographs of Geneva Lake by Fred Noer are on display through July 25 in Roberta’s Art Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The exhibit, titled “Geneva Lake: A Distant Shore,” features 33 photos of Noer’s evolving view of the lake from its 20-mile shore path during shifts in time, season, and human presence.

The summer gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The gallery is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

A reception for Noer will be held from noon-2 p.m., Tuesday, July 15. The event features an artist talk and an audience Q&A at 12:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit captures the rhythm of nature, the passage of time, and the ways people engage with the land and water. Blending decades of observation with a deep sense of place, the work invites viewers to reflect on beauty, change, and what it means to truly see what is closest to us.

Noer, a Burlington resident, is a photographer and writer who has spent more than five decades documenting the world through words and images. His artistic journey began in 1973 at car races in Milwaukee and Indianapolis, where he first used photography to capture the energy and detail of motorsports. Later, he served as editor and publisher of The Times, the family-owned weekly newspaper in Walworth.

Noer’s photography focuses on landscapes and community life throughout Walworth County. He places special emphasis on the Geneva Lake area, drawing inspiration from everyday beauty and quiet reflection. His work has appeared in numerous publications and has been exhibited in galleries and community spaces in southeastern Wisconsin.
