TOWN OF LINN — Firefighters from five area departments extinguished a chimney fire Tuesday morning that spread to the attic and melted siding of a two-story home on Highway 120.

According to a news release, the Lake Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to the residence at N484 State Highway 120 at approximately 10:10 a.m. Units from Fontana, Hebron, the Town of Delavan, and Elkhorn provided automatic aid during the response.

First responders arrived within six minutes of the dispatch and observed smoke coming from the attic of the single-family home. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack while additional arriving units established a water supply.

Crews brought the fire under control shortly after arrival and declared it fully extinguished at 10:32 a.m. Officials said damage was limited to the exterior walls and the adjoining attic space.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported, and officials said no criminal activity is suspected. While the specific cause remains under investigation, Fire Chief John Peters used the incident to remind the community about the importance of annual chimney maintenance.

Peters recommended that residents have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned before the first use of the season to prevent fires caused by creosote buildup, blockages, or damage. He said a clean chimney improves efficiency while protecting residents from fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

The chief also emphasized the necessity of maintaining working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas. Peters noted that testing these devices monthly and replacing batteries as needed can provide the early warning necessary to save lives during an emergency.
