FONTANA — A 57-year-old woman died Thursday evening during a boating mishap on Geneva Lake in Fontana.

The name and where the woman is from were not yet released.

According to a news release, the Fontana Police Department and Fontana Fire Department were called out to Gordy’s Marine in Fontana about 8 p.m. Thursday for a water rescue.

When they arrived, responders learned that a 57-year-old woman had fallen off of a motorized watercraft while it was performing a docking maneuver.

The woman then became entangled in the watercraft’s propeller.

Emergency responders were able to free the woman from the propeller but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the watercraft was cooperative with the investigation.

Alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor in the cause of the accident.

Criminal charges have not been filed, according to police.

The investigation remains open and is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Assisting law enforcement agencies included Linn Township Police Department, Walworth Police Department, Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, Geneva Lakes Law Enforcement Agency, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Assisting fire departments included Walworth Fire Department, City of Lake Geneva Fire Department and the Division 103 Dive Team.
