ELKHORN — An Elkhorn man was airlifted to a burn center with severe injuries and a child was treated at a local hospital following an apartment fire Sunday.

According to a news release, city of Elkhorn emergency personnel responded to the reported structure fire on Market Street about noon.

When they arrived, emergency responders saw an active fire inside unit 104. Crews immediately evacuated residents and provided medical care to the man and his child who were inside the unit. Firefighters were able to suppress the fire and contain it to the single apartment.

The man received treatment from Elkhorn Area Fire Department EMS before being transported by Flight for Life to the Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s – Regional Burn Center.

He suffered severe burns to his hands and feet. The child was taken by ambulance to Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, where she was treated and released to family.

Investigators have determined the fire was accidental and that the blaze was caused by the use of a flammable liquid in a jewelry cleaning machine.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and fire departments from Delavan, East Troy, LaGrange and Mukwonago. Local businesses Kwik Trip and Casey’s donated food and water to the responding teams.
